Augusta police probe report of man who robbed motel with baseball bat

AUGUSTA — Police are investigating an armed robbery that reportedly took place early Friday at the Super 8 motel at 395 Western Ave. in Augusta.

The motel reported that a man whose face was partly covered entered the motel around 1:30 a.m., demanded money and threatened an on-duty worker with an unidentified object, said Deputy Chief Kevin Lully, of the Augusta Police Department, in a news release.

The robber used a baseball bat to threaten the worker, according to an employee of the motel who answered the phone later in the day. The man fled after receiving about $130, said the employee, who did not want his full name in the paper and identified himself only as Sam.

“Police are investigating it,” he said. “This is the first time we’ve had (an armed robbery) like this one.” Then he added, “Everyone is safe.”

The robber was described as being 5-foot-9 and wearing dark clothing, including a sweatshirt with a hood that was pulled over his head and something around the lower half of his face, Lully said.

Afterward, police searched the area with the assistance of a dog and a member of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office but were unable to locate the suspect.

They’re asking anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Ben Murtiff at 626-2370, ext. 3437. They did not release photos of the suspect because the photos are of poor quality, Lully said.

In Augusta, the annual number of reported robberies generally has been declining over the last few years, according to data the city shares with a mapping website called RAIDS Online. Five years ago, it was around 19. In the last year, it was eight. That marks a 58 percent drop.

But the number of those robberies that have been reported at commercial locations, such as grocery stores and gas stations, has remained more consistent. Just four have been reported in the last year, which is about the same number as five years ago.

Windsor man charged after standoff in June

A Windsor man is expected to be arraigned in September on criminal charges stemming from an overnight standoff in June in Windsor.

In the meantime, Stephen Bourget, attorney for Brandon Brents, said based on psychological counseling that Brent is undergoing at the VA Maine Healthcare System-Togus, an agreement on a disposition in the case is in the works. Brents, 32, made his initial appearance in court July 6 at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta.

Brents has been charged with domestic violence reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and creating a police standoff.

In his affidavit requesting an arrest warrant, Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeffrey Boudreau said he took a report shortly before midnight June 20 of a Windsor man shooting a rifle at his wife.

In the affidavit, Boudreau said when the woman arrived at their Greeley Road home that evening, she found her husband’s vehicle in a ditch at the end of their driveway. When she pulled into the driveway herself, she said, Brant appeared with a rifle in his hands, threatened to shoot her and fired one round. She fled and called the police.

Kennebec County deputies and troopers from the Maine State Police went to the home, where Brents was seen inside.

Brents gave himself up at 4:23 a.m., according to the news release from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office. No one was injured.

Boudreau said he interviewed Brents, who has served in the military and said he had been drinking that night at home and at a friend’s house and had considered taking his own life. When his wife arrived home, he said he shot into the air, not at her, according to the affidavit.

His wife initially said she was unsure where Brents had pointed his weapon, but later said it had been pointed at her.

Boudreau said he took Brents to the hospital for evaluation because of the threats he had made against himself.

Bourget said he hopes to secure an earlier court date for his client.

West Gardiner man, 60, accused of sexually assaulting teenager

AUGUSTA — A 60-year-old West Gardiner man was arrested Friday on a charge of unlawful sexual contact after an alleged encounter with a teenager last April at his home.

The man, Kenneth D. Marquis Sr., was arrested around 8:30 a.m. and taken to the Kennebec County jail, according to a news release from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

The teenager named in the complaint against Marquis is 16 years old.

On Friday afternoon, Marquis had his initial appearance at the Capital Judicial Center on a video feed from the jail. After the hearing, he was released from jail on $1,000 bail, with conditions of release that include no contact with the alleged victim.

Unlawful sexual contact is a class D misdemeanor punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, according to the Office of the Maine Attorney General.

Police arrested Marquis on Friday morning after meeting with the teenager multiple times in June, according to a probable cause affidavit written by Detective Brittany Johnson, of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators also tried to speak with Marquis, but no one answered the door when they stopped at his home on June 28. After they reached him by phone, he ultimately declined to meet with them, Johnson said.

He also told them he has an attorney, but the attorney was not identified in the affidavit.

South China man accused in plot to smuggle drugs into Waldo jail

$

AUGUSTA — A South China man is accused in a plot to smuggle drugs to Waldo County jail inmates by secreting them in a courthouse bathroom.

Thomas Nichols, 50, was arrested late Thursday night at his home on charges of aggravated unlawful furnishing of Subutex (burenorphine) and violation of conditions of release. He was taken to the Kennebec County jail in Augusta.

The complaint filed at the Capital Judicial Center says the offenses occurred June 25 in South China when Nichols was free on pre-conviction bail and when he previously had been convicted of aggravated trafficking or furnishing drugs in Knox County in 1996.

Nichols made an initial appearance Friday in court via video from jail, and a judge set bail at $10,000 cash with conditions prohibiting him from use and possession of illegal drugs and from leaving the state. The judge imposed an 8 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew and ordered Nichols to participate in electronic monitoring while on bail.

An affidavit by Walter Corey, a special agent with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, seeking an arrest warrant for Nichols lays out the investigator’s view.

It says that Nichols had been released on bail from Knox County courts on Aug. 23, 2017, but it does not mention the charge. It also says he was granted bail by Lincoln County courts on Nov. 29, 2017, again without mentioning the charge.

Corey said another MDEA agent learned that “Steven Galati was going to attempt to take contraband into the Two Bridges Jail after he made a court appearance in the Waldo County Superior Court on June 25, 2018.”

Galati, 49, of Searsport, had been arrested March 18 in Waldo County by officers with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency on charges of aggravated trafficking in heroin, the Lincoln County News reported at the time.

Corey wrote that Galati had tried to use a main-floor bathroom in the Belfast courthouse on June 25, which was something prohibited.

That same day, a duct-taped package was found in the men’s bathroom on the main floor, and Corey said he opened it and found four suboxone strips and nine Subutex pills. The prescription drugs are used to treat opioid addiction.

Later, Corey said he learned that several people at Two Bridges Regional Jail had been charged with trafficking in prison contraband during the week of June 10 and that one inmate in particular was suspected of getting it into the facility.

Corey said phone calls Arbour made from the jail indicated that another person was supposed to place the drugs in the bathroom.

That man told Corey that he had obtained the pills from Nichols that morning and that Nichols was wearing a GPS monitoring unit on his ankle at the time.

LEWISTON — Shots were fired in downtown Lewiston on Friday evening, sending police scrambling to Horton Street where spent casings were found in the street.

Witnesses said between six and 12 shots rang out at about 6:30 p.m. followed by screams and the sound of rounds striking metal.

It was not immediately known whether anyone was struck by gunfire.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and seeing three people running between apartment houses and climbing a fence between Horton and Howe streets.

Several spent rounds were found in a driveway near the corner of Horton and Walnut streets. Police quickly cordoned off that area and taped off a section of Horton Street between Walnut and Birch streets.

Police remained at the scene later Friday night collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses.

The gunfire, the latest of several incidents over the spring and summer, brought dozens of onlookers to the area.

SOUTH PARIS — Corrections officials are investigating the death of an Oxford County Jail inmate who died four days after suffering self-inflicted injuries at the lockup.

According to his obituary, Scott A. Britton, 47, of South Paris died Tuesday at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The cause of death was not immediately available Friday.

Oxford County Jail officials said Britton’s injuries were self-inflicted, but they didn’t elaborate on the type of injuries.

The death is being investigated by the Maine Department of Corrections and the state Medical Examiner’s Office.

Britton was booked at the jail July 3 on a charge of possessing scheduled drugs. Oxford police said they arrested Britton in the Walmart parking lot after he was found in his car shooting up heroin. Police said a search of the vehicle produced 4 grams of heroin, needles and the painkiller gabapentin.

After he was found injured at the jail, officials said, Britton was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway before he was taken to Maine Medical Center.

An autopsy conducted Saturday in a Hampden murder investigation has concluded that the victim died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, Maine State Police said Saturday.

Philip Clark

Philip Clark, 55, of 557 Kennebec Road in Hampden, was charged with murder Friday in the death of the woman who lived in the same building, according to police. Clark is being held at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and is expected to make an initial court appearance on Monday.

State police said they are not yet able to identify the victim.

“Because of some of the injuries positive identification cannot be made,” state police Lt. Troy Gardner said in a statement Saturday. “Detectives will be working with the (state medical examiner’s) office to assist in the process of making positive identification over the next couple of days.”

Court documents say Clark and the victim both lived in the building and their apartments were connected by a door to a common hallway, News Center Maine (WCSH/WLBZ) reported.

An arrest warrant was issued for Clark after he didn’t appear in court on Thursday on criminal trespassing charges

Members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit went to the home on Friday regarding a welfare check that was brought to their attention by the Hampden Police Department. After arriving at the scene on Friday, Clark, who was home at the time, was arrested.

A New York City man was arrested during a traffic stop Friday night after crack cocaine was found in his vehicle, Maine State Police said Sunday.

Spencer Stephone

State police reported on Instagram that Stephone Spencer, 39, of the Bronx, New York, was arrested after his vehicle was stopped in the northbound lane on the Maine Turnpike in Ogunquit at 10:45 p.m. by members of the Maine State Police ProActive Criminal Enforcement Team.

Ibo, a police dog, alerted the officers to the presence of narcotics, and 110 grams of crack cocaine was located in the vehicle during a search, state police said.

Spencer was charged with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs. He was transported to the York County Jail in Alfred, where he is being held on $50,000 bail.

Woman fatally stabbed on downtown Lewiston sidewalk

A Lewiston woman was fatally stabbed in front of her two young children Sunday morning on the sidewalk outside a downtown laundromat, Maine State Police said.

One of several bystanders who witnessed the attack tackled the man who stabbed Kimberly Dobbie, holding him until Lewiston police arrived, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Dobbie, 48, had just started a load of laundry at Rancourt’s Laundromat on Sabattus Street and stepped outside with her children, 11-year-old twins, when she was attacked just before 11 a.m.

McCausland said Dobbie and her assailant knew one another, but he did not have any additional details about their relationship, or the confrontation outside the laundromat.

The suspect, who had not been charged by Sunday evening, was hospitalized after reporting chest pains, McCausland said.

Dobbie was taken to Central Maine Medical Center and died there early Sunday afternoon. An autopsy is likely to take place Monday, McCausland said.

The woman’s children are with family members, he said.

Dobbie lived at Hope Haven Gospel Mission in Lewiston, which provides a shelter, a soup kitchen and drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.

The homicide is the latest burst of violence in Lewiston in recent weeks.

On Friday, police responded to six to 12 gunshots near Horton Street, where spent shells were found in a driveway behind The Washtub laundromat at Horton and Walnut streets. No injuries were reported.

The previous weekend, three men were arrested July 7 in connection with reports of gunshots fired in the downtown area earlier in the day. No victim was found, but several people reported hearing at least five gunshots about 6 a.m. near the corner of Bartlett and Walnut streets.

In June, a Lewiston man died after being struck in the head during a large brawl near Kennedy Park downtown. Police did not provide details but did say tensions had escalated at Kennedy Park over the past month, including at least three confrontations between groups. In the encounter that left Donald Giusti, 38, dead, witnesses said it began after teenagers in a car drove past the park and shot pellets and BBs at a group gathered there. Several members of the group pursued the car to Knox Street, where a melee broke out, with the teenagers reportedly wielding sticks, bats and bricks, sources said.

Correction: This story was updated at 10 a.m. Monday July 16, 2018, to correct the ages of Kimberly Dobbie’s children.
